Last week, we checked out and talked about the Pinnacle Camper Cookware Set from GSI Outdoors. At the very same time we were putting that set through its paces, we were also checking out their Crossover Kitchen Kit. This compact kitchen kit nestles nicely inside of the Pinnacle Camper Cookware Set (If you want to remove two mugs and soup bowls) or if you want to invest in an inexpensive carabiner you can easily clip it on to your backpack, Pinnacle set, or just about anywhere else you have an available loop.
Compact and lightweight, but not short on handy supplies. The bag itself is light-weight but well-sewn to ensure your not leaving half your utensils on the trail somewhere. It also features a vented top compartment for storing your dish-washing accessories without them molding inside a plastic bag somewhere. (Camp towel, Scrub pad & Soap bottle included) Then you have the cooking utensils themselves, it has a collapsible ladle, tongs and spatula, all of which fold down to just under 7″ long, and stow nicely in the bag. Each of these folding utensils also has a lock, to keep it from folding back up on you while your working with hot food.
Then you have the compact cutting board, also perfectly sized to fit in the Crossover kit, but still large enough to cut up almost anything you’ll need on the road. (Skip the 10lb roast, that might get messy!) We had a little camp-fire conversation about how to improve the size of this cutting board without losing the portability, and the idea of having a collapsible or fold-able cutting board came up, but through the conversation the possibility of food bourn bacteria sneaking in the cracks of something more complicated came up. We decided that we like the small 6.5″x 3.25″ size for its portability and seamless design for safety.
Then you have to spice it up, right? It comes with a smaller version of GSI’s Spice Missile, that has four compartments to hold your spices. We filled it up with salt, pepper, basil and cayenne pepper and had ourselves some devilishly delicious Chili and some savory spaghetti sauce. It also comes with a small squeeze bottle that is the perfect size for oil.
We love it for portability and completeness. Adding just a little weight to our packs actually cut down on our utensils and accompaniments. Check it out on the official GSI Outdoors Website, or grab your very own here.
